Union Density in GA
The UAW has a very small presence in Georgia. According to the Department of Labor, there are fewer than 1,000 UAW members in the state, and overall union density is significantly below the national average. Thanks to Georgia’s lower union density, the auto industry has thrived. 162,621 Georgians are employed in auto-related production jobs, and the industry was responsible for almost $37 billion in car sales in 2022.
Georgia autoworkers have benefited from this industry growth. According to the Department of Labor, Georgia workers in automobile and light duty motor vehicle manufacturing make an average of $83,435 per year. This is significantly higher than the average wage in Georgia, and is actually higher than the average UAW member at one of Detroit’s Big Three automakers, after adjusting for cost of living.
Unlike the UAW-represented Big Three, who have had an estimated 38,000 layoffs since their most recent contracts in 2023, Honda’s transmission plant in Georgia has never had a mass layoff.
“Shawn Fain had a lot of people fooled. We thought he was for us, that we had gotten the corrupt people out. He was named ‘man of the year,’ but he let us down… We were walking around the plant every day asking the UAW what was happening. They said they didn’t know? Why didn’t they know, they were taking dues out of our checks every month.”
